I’ve met the most amazing couples because I teach NFP. Teaching Natural Family Planning has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. My wife and I love it and we wish we could do this on a more full time basis. It’s true, that when 2 or 3 gather in His name, so is Christ among us.
My wife and I were teaching on one occasion when a married couple spoke up towards the end of class. The husband was impressed that you can use a chart to see how stress affects a woman’s cycle. He then went on to say that he and his wife had been married for 10 years and that had recently been very unhappy. They had been using birth control to free from unwanted pregnancy and so that they could enjoy their life together until they were ready to start a family. One day, after they had already entered a period of unhappiness in their marriage, his wife informed him that she was pregnant despite being on the pill. This was clearly unexpected, and he was frustrated and upset. Being a helicopter pilot, he had been out on a flight later that day when another unexpected event occurred, his helicopter crashed. On the day he heard the unexpected news of new life, he came face to face with the reality of an unexpected death. A death that he would be saved from on this day. Miraculously, he survived and when his wife arrived at the hospital he expressed his newfound appreciation for the life that their love created. He confessed to our class that he had been guilty of objectifying his wife after years of her using the pill and was glad to hear that with Natural Family Planning, he too could take an active part of their family planning. He gave a wonderful witness to the rest of our class that my wife and I could not provide. He serves to me as a reminder that from Love comes Life, and both Love and Life are a gift; a gift that Natural Family Planning supports by not dividing the unitive from the procreative.
Another couple who attended our class had another unique story. The husband was a practicing Catholic and his wife was agnostic. As she said, since she wasn’t Catholic, she won’t go to hell for taking the pill and refused Natural Family Planning at her husband’s request. After time, she started to experience depression. As a drug rep she was fully aware of the side effects of the pill, and because of this she decided to avoid longer term contraception such as the depo shot and nuva ring. Her doctor prescribed anti-depressants which led to other side effects. After being offered more medicine she finally said enough and went to her husband to learn Natural Family Planning, which is how they ended up in one of our sessions. We weren’t there to convert her, and neither was her husband. He just wanted to love her for who she is and we were happy to help and be a witness to the wonderful lifestyle that comes with natural family planning.
These are just two of the amazing people we’ve met as instructors and we’ve met so many others. I went into teaching because I believe that families are what makes the world go around. It may take a village to raise a man, but it takes a family to raise a village. The family makes up the communities that make up our cities, states, countries, and the world. As the family goes, so goes the world. As is often the case when stepping into a ministry, the minister is often ministered to. The reward has been in the giving. I encourage anybody who feels so called, to become an NFP teacher. It has blessed my wife and I so.
My name is James, and #iusenfp.
